The Packing Begins

So, our ten week odyssey is rapidly approaching. In just a couple of days we'll be leaving our house until September to travel around the country. Our first stop is my parents' house on Long Island for a short visit before my high school reunion. In exactly one week, we'll be pulling out of their driveway and heading west.

Our job for today is a packing trial run. We bought a Thule box for the roof of our Passat wagon and need to decide what goes on the roof and what goes in the car. I've started piling all our gear in the living room and it's a frighteningly large pile. Maybe I should be re-thinking my firmly anti-minivan stance...

  1. hooray, first comment! :) I'll have fun following this. I have a dream of spending a summer vacation on a cross-country trek like this some year -- steve's job is the sticky point, but maybe we can figure out how he can work from the road for a good portion of it. I hear you -- we have an SUV and every year when we head out on our missouri trek we think "now why don't we have a minivan?" good luck!!

  3. Can't understand why you don't like mini vans. I LOVED mine when the kids were little. Did you know that they interviewed Moms before manufacturing them and made them from the tips offered? A car company listening to their users? Pretty cool...

  5. Thanks for the clarification, Mimi. Couldn't imagine Fred with a mini-van! I know mini-vans are highly functional, but I like the way my turbo 5 speed AWD Passat wagon drives! If you can find me a stick shift mini-van, I might consider buying one.
